The Damage: $312 and change.

December 30th, 2006

I am writing from lovely Dearborn, MI just a few miles from the IKEA store in Canton. Woo, my footsies hurt. We got there bright and early to try to lessen the pain of shopping on Winter Sale weekend. Without trying we spent more this year than last, there were some good sales.

Some things I noticed:

1: The layout of this store is one like we will have in Ohio, it’s a little, uhm… confusing. Ours will be a bit bigger so should invest in a GPS before gran opening I never did find the pets section.

2: They have cart corrals and actually let you take your purchases out the door to your car. No more “loading zone bingo”. (I hope they let us do this in West Chester’s Store.)

3: They bug you to stay in the cafe until 10am. Schaumburg lets you wander the top floor at least.

4: No matter how many times you ask the IKEA employees won’t sell you a logo lanyard like they wear their IDs on. Not even if you beg really bad and fake crying while waving a $5 bill.

5: It was so freaking busy I never had a chance to take pictures. I’m a bad blogger. Mea culpa, beg forgive and all that.

I live within reasonable driving distance of the four toronto area ones (the one in Burlington is about 5 minutes from where i work, and i go there so much the staff recognises me…. scary.)

The trick to getting your stuff to your car is simply, in most cases, to wheel the cart through the wheelchair entrance/exit. at *every single one* i’ve been to, it’s worked.

They also don’t let us leave the cafe until the store officially opens - in large part due especially to “wacky wednesdays” and the rabid ways some people attack the as-is department.

I actually do have a lanyard, myself - they put them on sale sometimes, when they’ve switched what kind the staff are wearing. They basically don’t want people wandering around social engineering. If you have one near you, and you go there often enough once yours is built, you’ll find them every now and then.

One thing you’ll also notice when you go once a week or so, is that they often have totally unadvertised, un-catalogued things around, but only for a couple of weeks, and then they’re gone again. Or they show up in one monthly flyer, and then they’re gone. That’s what i find most fun about the place (that and the rabid way i attack the as-is department…. major scores include a denim sofa-bed for a hundred bucks and a beddinge bed-frame for $23. unopened.)

    Cheers!

Is the sale still going on? How long does it last?

More important question: I’m looking to furnish a living room, library and three bedrooms. Lots of stuff. IKEA shipping is ridiculously high, and I don’t fancy driving a Budget truck for 4 hours to Ohio. Is there any other way of shipping this stuff?
